Background

Dr. Subrata Chakravarty was born in Assam, a culturally diverse state in Northeast India, famous for its tea plantations, Assam Silk, and one-horned rhinoceroses. His father’s role in the Indian Armed Forces led the family to move frequently across India. Subrata, along with his two elder sisters, grew up in army cantonments, which gave him a unique upbringing filled with discipline, diversity, and a love for travel.

Education and Early Medical Career

Dr. Subrata Chakravarty graduated high school with distinction and pursued his passion for medicine at Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati, earning his MBBS degree. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Indian Army as a Short Service Commissioned officer in the rank of Captain and served for five years in the Army Medical Corps, eventually reaching the rank of Major. For his distinguished service, he was recommended for the prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal.

After his time in the army, Dr. Subrata Chakravarty pursued a specialization in Anesthesiology from Delhi University. He then joined All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, as a Registrar in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He conducted research and also served as a Senior Research Fellow with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

International Training and Research

Dr. Subrata Chakravarty completed a two-year fellowship in labor analgesia at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore. During his fellowship, he presented his research on labor epidural analgesia at notable international conferences, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Annual Meeting in Chicago. His study was later published in a peer-reviewed journal. He also completed the CITI (Course in Protection of Human Research Subjects), emphasizing his commitment to ethical standards in human research.

Advanced Fellowship at the University of Toronto

Driven by his passion for labor analgesia and high-risk obstetrics, Dr. Subrata Chakravarty joined the University of Toronto for a three-year fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. Here, he received the Research in Education Award from the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) and published a study on high-fidelity simulation for teaching general anesthesia for Cesarean deliveries in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia.

With his permanent residency in Canada and a medical license, Dr. Subrata Chakravarty began his role as a Staff Anesthesiologist with Alberta Health Services. He continues to practice and teach, having been appointed as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta.
